Straight Line Acceleration Tutorial By Joe Walker
One thing we always try to teach--and the fast athletes do this well-- is to make sure that the foot stays behind the center of mass during the drive phase (start and acceleration period of any run). We want the drive to be a straight line from the ankle through the knee and then through the hip. It is easy to over stride by putting the foot down under the belly button for the sake of balance, but this does not produce the power you must have in the start. The foot must drive down and push back creating the straight line we are looking for--ankle/knee/hip. The powerpull machine almost forces you to do this correctly and is a great teaching tool in the mechanics of a good start and good acceleration pattern in addition to its obvious benefits of strength and explosion.
